Atlanta is one of the country’s richest bastions of Irish culture — so on St. Patrick’s Day, the whole city erupts into a rich tapestry of celebrations. Read on for five of the best places to celebrate your St. Patrick’s Day in Georgia’s busy “Athens of the South”:
ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE
Atlanta’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade is one of the biggest and oldest of its kind. The parade includes representatives from Atlanta’s many Irish communities, but that’s not all: You’ll also see clowns, drill teams, bagpipe and drumming corps, floats, and of course you can always choose to join in the parade yourself.
FADO’S WEEKLONG BLOCK PARTY
Fado Irish Pub’s St. Patrick’s Day block party is so big that it spans two whole weekends full of beer gardens, cocktail stations, and of course live music all day.
Speaking of big, don’t miss Atlanta’s largest St. Patrick’s Day festival for almost a decade running, Lepre*Con. This party features lots of free-spirited revelries built around live music on outdoor stages, plus plenty of drinks and wild Irish-themed costumes inside the Park Tavern.
SHAMROCK THE STATION
Every year, Radio 105.7, Meehan’s Public House and Atlanta Station take over Central Park for ShamROCK the Station: a full day of family-friendly activities, Irish dancing, and lots of live music. Bars all around the park will be serving Guinness and other adult Irish beverages all day long.
LUCK OF THE SQUARE
St. Patrick’s Day footraces are a tradition all over the country. Atlanta has one of the best in its Luck of the Square at Colony Square, a morning 5k run/walk that also serves as the pre-party for Atlanta’s spectacular St. Patrick’s Day parade. After the parade, the square turns into a post-parade party zone, with live music, beer, dancing, food, and of course all the shenanigans you can handle.
