HOW TO GROW AN INDOOR HERB GARDEN

  |     |   Uncategorized

When you have easy access to fresh herbs in your kitchen, you’ll be more likely to cook healthy, delicious, homemade meals more often in your apartments in Atlanta. Herbs like basil, thyme, rosemary and parsley are hearty enough that you don’t even need a green thumb to grow them. Follow these tips for growing an indoor herb garden and you’ll be thinking of yourself as a chef in no time!

1. CHOOSE A SUNNY WINDOW
Herbs need plenty of sunlight to thrive. You’ll want to place your herb garden where it will receive several hours of sunlight each day.

2. LOCATE SHELVING
If you don’t already have shelving in your window, you can substitute an open shelving unit and simply place it in front of the window. Another option is to set a table or low bookcase beneath the window. If you do that, be sure to lay down a protective layer so the wood doesn’t accidentally get wet when you water your herbs.

3. DECIDE ON THE PLANTING STYLE
How you plant your indoor herb garden is entirely up to you. Some people like to plant each herb in its own pot. Others like to combine several herbs in one large round planter. Still, others prefer to make an indoor herb garden container out of a window box planter. Since herbs are so hearty, you can choose any of these options with equally successful results. Don’t worry about the flavor or aroma of the herbs getting mixed up with whatever plant is nearest to it. Each herb plant will maintain its individual qualities.

4. PURCHASE YOUNG HERB PLANTS AT A NURSERY
Though you can start your indoor herb garden from seeds if you want, it may be more satisfying to start with young plants that already have developed leaves. These are readily available at nurseries. Once you purchase your selection, transplant the young herb plants carefully into your own planters.

5. FOLLOW THE NURSERY’S INSTRUCTIONS
Each herb has its own unique needs as far as watering goes. Be sure to refer to the instructions that come with each plant. If you do, you’ll be harvesting fresh herbs for your cooking as early as a week after you plant your indoor herb garden.
