5 Steps to Starting a New Fitness Program This Year

Starting a fitness program can help you improve coordination and balance, reduce the risk of chronic disease, improve sleep and even boost self-esteem. It’s time to get out of those Atlanta apartments and start moving. The good news – it’s easy to get started with these simple steps. 

 

Step #1 – Talk to Your Doctor

Before starting any type of fitness program, it’s always recommended to talk to your physician. This way you can be sure that you’re physically ready to begin your new challenge. This is particularly important if you have chronic health conditions or you’re not currently physically active.

 

Step #2 – Find a Fitness Buddy 

Find a friend, a colleague or a family member to help keep you accountable as you start your fitness program. Having a fitness buddy will help keep you motivated, and they’ll challenge you to push yourself a bit harder as you work toward a healthier you.

 

Step #3 – Set Some Reasonable, Achievable Goals 

Come up with some reasonable, achievable goals that you can pursue as you begin your fitness program. Goals that are too large can quickly become overwhelming, so get started with some smaller goals. Every time you achieve a goal, set a new one and keep pushing forward.

Step #4 – Choose Fun Activities

One of the keys to staying on track with a new fitness program is to make sure you’re doing things you love. You don’t have to run on the treadmill daily to improve your fitness and health. Find activities you enjoy, whether it’s hiking, doing yoga, playing tennis, swimming or dancing. The more you like what you’re doing, the more likely you are to stick with it throughout the year. 

 

Step #5 – Put It on Your Schedule 

Don’t leave your fitness to chance – put it on your schedule. Taking care of your physical fitness is essential, so make it a priority and add it to the calendar.
